Pool day has a way of making adults act like they have never seen water before.
You sit in the sun. You float. You snack. You reapply sunscreen. You get in and out of the pool. You sit in a chair that may or may not have been dry. You tell yourself you will shower when you get home.
Then you get home and suddenly the couch looks very persuasive.
Do not let the couch win.
Why the post-pool shower matters
After a pool day, your skin may be carrying sunscreen, sweat, pool water, outdoor grime, and the vague smell of a wet towel that has seen things.
You do not need a complicated recovery routine. But you do need to rinse and wash before pool day becomes your evening identity.
The easy post-pool routine
Rinse sooner, not later
The longer you sit around after swimming, the more likely you are to decide that “later” means “tomorrow.”
Take the shower while the pool day is still fresh in your mind and your swimsuit is still making decisions for you.
Use soap, not just water
A rinse is good. Soap is better.
Focus on the places where sunscreen, sweat, and pool water hang around: neck, shoulders, back, underarms, chest, legs, feet, and anywhere your swimsuit sat against your skin.
Wash your hands thoroughly
Pool days involve shared surfaces: gates, chairs, coolers, towels, snacks, sunscreen bottles, pool toys, and sometimes children who appear to be coated in a mixture of popsicle and chaos.
Wash your hands like they participated in the day—because they did.
Rinse and hang the swimsuit
Do not ball it up in a bag, trunk, bathroom corner, or mysterious laundry pile. Rinse it, wring it gently, and hang it to dry.
Wet swimwear left in a pile is not a storage method. It is a science project with elastic.
Use a fresh towel after the shower
The towel you used at the pool has already lived a full life. Let it retire to the laundry. Use a clean towel after your actual shower.
Apply deodorant to clean, dry skin
After you shower, dry off completely before deodorant and clean clothes. Rushing this step is how you feel sticky again ten minutes later.
Pool day should end clean
The best pool days feel easy because the reset is easy. Shower, soap, fresh towel, dry clothes, deodorant, and hang the wet stuff where it belongs.
The Rub take: enjoy the water. Do not become the towel.
